Conglomerates and the Media
Published in Hardcover by New Press (October, 1997)
Authors: Patricia Aufderheide, Erik Barnouw, Richard M. Cohen, Thomas Frank, Todd Gitlin, David Lieberman, Mark Crispin Miller, Gene Roberts, and Thomas Schatz
Average review score:

How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch!
Many have watched with dismay as conglomerates have gobbled up an increasing number of media companies. This collaborative effort between the New Press and New York University's (NYU) Departments of Culture and Communications, Education, and Journalism addresses that concern. Experts ranging from practitioners to academics were invited to participate in a lecture series hosted by NYU in 1996. Edited versions of their talks appear in this volume. An introduction by media scholar Todd Gitlin is followed by nine individually authored chapters covering media activities from radio and television to newspapers and book publishing. Surveying changes in telecommunications, Aufderheide (communication, American Univ.) calls for public vigilance and a middle ground between the apocalyptic doomsayers and those who believe the new age of communication has dawned. This book will be of value to media scholars as well as to citizens following this issue.

How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch

This book is quite insightful, especially for a Southeast Asian media professional like myself. I recommend this book to everyone, even to those who work in the upper regions of the power sturcture of the media conglomerates critiqued in the collection.

For starters, it is a wonderful overview of how the media economy is shifting all over the world. The US market is saturated, as the book said, and the rest of the world is ripe for picking, especially my country, the Philippines.

This book is a tool to launch our own media analysis of what's happenning in our own countries. And from an analysis, we launch a critique, and from a critique, we launch steps to face the situation.

This book, published by New Media, is invaluable. I first read about it in an issue of Utne Reader. I took down the title and hunted it down in Amazon. I found it, bought it, and consumed it. I loved it because it gave me useful insights to work with.

This is a book I will dog-ear in my attempts to understand what to do in my field, and how to start my own media conglomerate from scratch. I already have my ideas, which I hope aren't just soundbites in my head.

Essays providing insight into a growing area of concern.
It is difficult to read Conglomerates and not be alarmed at the growing media control by a few major companies. The book begins with an insightful introduction by noted scholar Todd Gitlin and includes essays from Mark Crispin Miller (Johns Hopkins scholar and author of Boxed In) and David Leiberman (USA Today), among other prominent writers. One discrepency occurs with Lieberman's piece: it is listed in the table of contents as "Conglomerates, News, and Children", but in the chapter it is referred to as "Conglomerates, News, and the Media," leaving the reader to decide the correct version. This book is a must have if you want to gain an understanding of what's happening with media monopolies; Bagdikian fans rejoice! However, it is not chalk full o' references, so students looking for cites to follow may be disappointed. In the introduction, Gitlin echos an earlier statement by Niel Postman (author of Amusing Ourselves to Death): "Big Brother isn't looming, Brave New World is."

The Dam Busters

Authors: Paul Brickhill and Richard Todd

True-life high adventure. TARGET: From Rhur dams to Hitler!
I first read this story as a freshman in high school and couldn't put it down! I have re-read the book several times since then. The adventures of 617 Squadron have all of the elements of an Indiana Jones movie; from the most inovative, fantastic, and bizarre ideas (five-ton bouncing bombs to ten-ton, earthquake producing "Tall Boy" bombs) to shear, white-knuckle, edge-of-your-seat danger (low-level night flying over Nazi Germany). Check out Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape" and "Reach for the Sky." You won't be disapointed

A first-class true-life epic of WWII British Aviation
I have read, and re-read this book many times over the last several years. Having studied 617 Squadron operations in general, and meeting some of the few survivors, I can't get enough of the inside story on this wonderful special-ops squadron. Also please read Enemy Coast Ahead, by Guy Gibson, who was the original Dambuster's leader. I find many of the ops after the dams raid to be even more interesting and harrowing !! This is a great read for general interest and true buffs alike.

Lancasters soar through the very jaws of death!
An absolute classic, "The Dam Busters" follows the adventures of 617 squadron. From its inception specifically for the attack on the Moehne and Eder dams to the destruction of the German battleship "Tirpitz" 617 Squadron showed the British just as capable at pinpoint targeting as their American cousins. Everytime I pick-up a text on the "heavies" I am reminded of the heroism and sacrifice of the amazing individuals who were carried aloft by them. Practical
As a new principal, I wanted a book to give me more confidence in dealing with parent conflicts. This book teaches practical scenarios for commonly experienced parental conflicts that produce a win-win outcome. The scripted dialogues and tips in nerve-wracking situations are clear and adaptable.

A solidly recommended emotional & verbal self-defense manual
Dealing With Difficult Parents (And With Parents in Difficult Situations) by Todd Whitaker (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana) and Douglas J. Fiore (Assistant Dean of the College of Education, State University of West Georgia) is a straightforward guide written especially for teachers, principals, and others who share a mandate to educate young minds. Individual chapters capably address how to deal with parents that prove difficult in any number of ways including abrasive personalities, hard to reach, excessive anger, and a host of other ill traits and situations. Dealing With Difficult Parents is a solidly recommended emotional and verbal self-defense manual for fostering the best possible learning environment.

HEADACHE RELIEF!
Do you find it challenging and frustrating to deal with the parent who is

- bossy?

- argumentative?

- apathetic?

- intimidating?

What's the best way to deliver bad news to parents?

Written for teachers, administrators, and other educators, this book will help you work with the most difficult parents in the most challenging situations. It shows you how to:

- avoid the "trigger" words which serve only to make bad situations worse

- use the right words and phrases to develop more positive relationships with parents

- deal with parents who accuse you of not being "fair"

- build positive relationships with even the most challenging parents

With vivid examples, this book will show you how to:

- handle a parent's complaint when the parent is right

- use body language to influence the way parents react to what you say

- make it easy to contact parents during the day to inform them when their children have done something worthy of praise (achieved a high grade, helped another student, etc.)

- increase parent involvement in their children's education both at school and at home

Delphi 2: A Developer's Guide
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (May, 1996)
Authors: Vince Kellen, Bill Todd, Ray Novak, and Brad Saenz
Average review score:

An excellent reference guide for Delphi 2.
This is a must have for Delphi programmers. It is chalked full of useful code. It is concise and to the point which makes it a great reference book.

The best guide for non-professional programmers using Delphi
As an environmental engineer, I use Delphi to develop standalone applications to access and analyze large water supply data bases. I have over 30 years experience developing and using water quality and quantity models in everything from FORTRAN to Delphi.

Of all the Delphi books I have used, this one is the most readable for the non-professional programmer, using a minimum of jargon and less focused on business applications. It has never failed to provide the hint I needed to move ahead on a programming problem. While not as comprehensive as other Delphi guides, such as Pacheco & Teixeira's, the information it presents is more accessible for quick reference. I look forward to Todd & Kellen coming out with an updated version for Delphi 4.

Great All-Purpose Reference
Of the 25 Delphi books that I own, this is the one I take with me when I don't know what will be required of me.

It is the perfect replacement documentation.

The Fourth Treasure
Published in Digital by Doubleday Publishing ()
Author: Todd A. Shimoda
Average review score:

A beautiful and disturbing look into the mind.
Todd Shimoda does it again in his second novel. Like his first book, 365 View of Mt. Fuji, this novel easily segues between the 17th and the 21st centuries. 4th Treasure is so interesting because it is a mystery and a love story, a treatise of the workings of the brain and a step into the unknown mysteries of the mind, a study of both living in the past and denying ones roots. The characters are vivid and believable. Many of the characters lead tragic lives, but this tragedy is intermixed with some really funny plot twists. Without spoiling the story, I loved the way Shimoda tied things up at the end without making a very pretty package. Finally, the beautiful calligraphy created by, L J C Shimoda is stunning. It is especially notable since much of it represents the twisted and confused thoughts of the Sensei after his stroke and so is not traditional calligraphy at that point. The book is beautiful to look at and a compelling read.

Simply Wonderful!
This elegantly illustrated and beautifully written book is one I would highly recommend to anyone who loves to be lost in a good story, strong characters and an unforgettable read. Although the book was just released, I cannot wait to read another by this author! You'll love it.

Beautifully written and illustrated!
Todd Shimoda's "The Fourth Treasure" is simply the most beautiful book to come across my desk in years. The story is innovative and inventive, and the illustrations add depth and insight to the narrative of old cultures, new science and human striving. The Shimodas (L.J.C. Shimoda, Todd's wife, illustrated the book with her beautiful calligraphy and abstract work) have created a work of art that you'll be proud to put on your shelf with the rest of your classics. Nan A. Talese and Doubleday should be commended for the classy presentation of this wonderful work.

The Good News About Nutrition, Exercise & Weight Control
Published in Paperback by Momentum Books Ltd (January, 1901)
Authors: Fred W. Stransky and R. Todd Haight
Average review score:

Featuring 102 delicious and healthy recipes
The Good News About Nutrition, Exercise & Weight Control is an outstanding, "user friendly" compendium featuring 102 delicious and healthy recipes, a 28-Day Menu Plan, a Fat & Fiber Counter, as well as a wealth of facts about high-protein/low-carb diets. Fad diets can be hazardous to good health. Here is a comprehensive, well-founded view of how lifestyle choices and patterns affect the body's natural disease prevention process. The Good News is enthusiastically recommended for anyone seeking to avoid the jeopardy inherent in fad diets and gimmicks, while needing to empower themselves and their personal health with solid, practical, basic information, advice, ideas, and recommendations.

A new lifestyle
I had heard about Dr. Stransky's book from his radio show, The Secrets to Good Health. I was visiting Michigan at the time. My mother has fought her weight for years and decided to go on the Atkins Diet. I was concerned about her health. After listening to Dr. Stransky, I decided to order his book. It is fabulous. I read it twice from cover to cover and learned so much. I gave the book to my mother and told her to read it. She did and started the 28 day plan diet he suggested. She is losing and has developed a new lifestyle that is lifelong and healthy. She knows it is going to take her several months to lose all her weight and get down to her recommended weight but she is going to Michigan and go through the Meadowbrook Health Enhancement Institute for her physical. Dr. Stransky, thank you!

Inspirational!!
Dr. Stransky's book should revolutionize the world's view of nutrition, diet, and exercise. He sheds light on the Atkins diet and nutritional supplements which have confused people and reveals many of the myths associated with such fads. He does this eloquently in a way that is easy for the general public to understand, and his work is research supported which gives him credibility. I especially liked the 10 steps to living to 100 chapter and the 28 day meal plan which gets you started on his plan without having to think! The recipes provided prove you can eat healthy without sacrificing taste. I have been a follower of Dr. Stransky's plan for years and I testify that it works...for the long term! Thank you, Dr. Stransky!!

In the Chat Room With God
Published in Paperback by RiverOak Publishing (March, 2002)
Authors: Todd Hafer and Jedd Hafer
Average review score:

Really Well Done
I read this book on a plane and must say that it's extremely well-written and will definitely resonate with Christian teens. The characters are very well-developed, and the Hafers use the chatroom-style format quite cleverly, using it to tell a nice story arc and not just as a gimmick. I highly recommend it.

An Excellent Teen Read!!!
I absolutely loved this book. Not only is the content socially and culturally relevant, but it is presented in a way that reaches teens where they are, as they are and with the respect they deserve. I even found myself marking off pages I found especially insightful! I highly recommend this book for all teens facing the difficult challenges of life today. This book is definitely worth checking out!!!

Wow!
Wow -- this is a great book. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could! The characters are believable, and you find yourself truly caring about them as the story progresses.

This is a unique book, and it looks cool too. I like the cover and the way the pages look like actual computer screens. This book lets you enjoy a great story and learn a lot about God in the process. I highly recommend In the Chat Room with God

It's Me, Teddy
Published in Hardcover by Storey Books (October, 1995)
Authors: Amber Alexander and Todd Cummings
Average review score:

Great for bears and humans alike!
If you have a Vermont Teddy Bear, this book is a *must* for you, since the hero of this book *is* a Vermont Teddy Bear. My bear, Christopher, and I read this together; and it got him all fired up to write "back home" to the factory, just like Teddy in the book is doing. :-) Beautiful graphics; very cute story of a bear's adventures once he leaves the factory; you just can't miss!

Children and teachers will love it!!!
As a second grade student teacher, I used this book within a unit on teddy bears and friendship. The children loved it. It was funny, engaging, and a great introduction to adventure.

GREAT illustrations!
The story is wonderfully original, but it's the beautiful illustrations that strike me most in this book. This is a cute tale of a teddy bear's adventures with the children who adopt him and makes a perfect companion to someone's very first teddy bear. I received this book for Christmas at age 16 and loved it.
